A running vocabulary should be instantly available as you read a text, with no irritating search in the back of the book or on the next page or in a mini alphabetical list. Clicking on words on online texts is fun but very slow for learners.

Although I have produced running vocabularies for 40 years or so, they have taken a sharp step forward with the advent of new technology, a successful utility for typing Greek on the PC (Antioch), and the possibility of downloading whole Greek and Latin texts and immediately incorporating them into one’s own work.

I think I now have the ideal solution, the page turned sideways (landscape), the text on the left, nicely spaced, and the vocabulary absolutely tailored to the lines, instantly available to the flick of an eye. This is not an edition but a tremendous aid for a first reading. Most of these RVs have text as well and all future ones will be like this. Some older RVs are vocabulary only, in newspaper columns Current users seem delighted by the response of their students. I aim at OCR set-books first, but could be tempted into providing IB texts
